Online 3D Printing
Many of us have heard of 3D printing technology on TV, newspaper, internet, social media etc. Then comes the question, What is 3D printing? How can we print in 3D? How does it work? How can we go online to get our product 3D printed. You have come to the right place for answers. Don't worry if you are a rookie in 3D printing, you are about to learn about one of the most exciting technologies in the world - 3D printing and also get to know the personalised online 3D printing service at Protovalley.
What is 3D Printing Technology? How Does it Work? How To 3D Print?
Before getting to know as to how to make use of our online 3D printing service, you need to know the basics of 3D printing. So What is 3D printing technology? 3D printing, which is also called additive manufacturing process in simple terms, is the process of making three dimensional physical objects from digital files. Why do we call it additive manufacturing process? It's because, the 3D physical object is built by adding or printing one layer on top of another until fully formed. I am sure at this point, all of you must be a bit confused. Well, let me give you a clearer picture by giving an example. Say you wish to make a cylinder using 3D printer. Remember what I said about additive manufacturing, it is printing one layer on top of another until fully formed. Similarly, a cylinder can be formed by adding or printing one circle, or ring, on top of another. Now let me explain you in a more elaborate way how to create a cylinder using 3D printer.
- Create a blueprint of the cylinder using modelling software like CAD
- Just to remind you again, a cylinder is formed by adding one circle on top of another
- For this, using a process called slicing software, the cylinder in the modelling software is sliced into layers of circle.
- Once sliced, the dimensions are sent to the 3D printer
- Thus 3D printer now builds cylinder by adding a circle on top of another
Up till now, we saw what is 3D printing and how to 3D print. Now let us see how a 3D printer works. A cylinder in a 3D printer can be made using plastic. A plastic roll is connected to the 3D printer. A printer head is housed inside the 3D printer. A printer head in layman's terms is actually a heater. When the plastic roll passes through the printer head, it is heated up. This hot plastic is passed the a small nozzle like opening and thus it liquefies. This liquefied plastic is deposited on to the print bed and thus it cools and solidifies.
A circle is drawn on the print bed from the liquefied plastic roll with the help of X axis and Y axis motor housed on the 3D printer. Then one circle on top of another is built using a Z axis motor and thus finally a cylinder is formed. This can be applied for any object, say, a cube, prism, flower vase, cup, keychains, architectural models etc.
Though 3D printing technology is quite new, it is going to be a revolutionary technology because of the advantages it offers over traditional manufacturing.
- The time it takes to manufacture a product is very minimal compared to traditional manufacturing
- Complex and sophisticated designs can be formed
- Personalization, which we love, can be done to the fullest using 3D printing technology
